Maya Angelou - Poet of Humanity

Trilok celebrates her as one of eight HOUSE HEROS -- she is a "Purple House" inspiration.

She gave Nature and Humanity a voice in several of her poems.

Below are phrases from "Ode to the Morning" which Maya Angelou presented at Clinton's inauguration)

TREE SPEAKS:
Come to me, here beside the river.
Plant yourself beside me,
Here beside the river.
Here, root yourselves
beside me.
I am the Tree
planted by the River,
which will not be moved.

Lift up your hearts
Here on the pulse of this fine day,
You may have the courage
to look up and out
upon me,
The rock, the river, and the tree.

You may have the grace
to look up and out
and into your sister's eyes
and into your brother's face,

And say, simply, very simply,
with hope,
GOOD MORNING.

Here are excerpts from Caged Bird, by Maya Angelou

FREE BIRD:

A free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wing
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

The free bird thinks
of another breeze
and the trade winds soft
through the sighing trees
and the fat worm's waiting
on a dawn bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.
