Amabie (Am a bee Yay). is a Yokai (or power-creature) from the folklore of Japanese culture. It first appeared as a woodcut in Japan in 1848, in a treacherous time of pandemic.
The fable goes like this:
One day, the ocean glowed green, and an official went out in a boat to see what was happening.
From the green phosphorescent glow emerged a creature. Part bird, part fish, part human... it had four distinct features:
a beak
scales
long hair
three webbed tail-feet
The creature said its name was Amabie, and reassured the man that things would one day be ok, and people would once again prosper with abundance. It urged the man to draw a picture of it, and show it to all the people, to ease their suffering, to bring them courage, hope, and peace in their time of strife.
For many years after that, people forgot about Amabie. But one day, people began to worry about a new problem. It was named Corona. People found new ways to help themselves be safe, like:
wearing masks and washing hands, and staying at home. But still they worried. Scientists worked to find medicines that might help. Artists said, let's make art that lifts our spirits, and gives us hope and courage.... Remember Amabie!? Let's draw Amabie and share our drawings with the whole world!
And so...
